Advert Analysis

M&S 2016 Christmas Ad: Christmas with love from Mrs Claus

Mise-En-Scene:
  •  Setting
    • Multiple: Mr and Mrs Claus' house, and Jake's family home; also a high, wide angle shot of London, which suggests a sense of pride and ownership being a British company.
    • Shift in scenes
  • Costume
    • Mrs Claus dresses in a red simple business-looking dress with a matching cardigan/jacket, and no jewellery. Red connotes passion, love, Santa and Christmas themes. Her outfit is relatively simplistic but still holds some notes of glamour, as we get a good glimpse of her jewellery, yet it displays a raw quality of femininity, and a sense of authority and power.
  • Make-up
    • There is a lack of make-up worn by the main protagonist, Mrs Claus, makes the viewer acknowledge that she means business. Its scarcity also makes the reader focus more on what is occurring in the scenes, and what is being narrated by the little boy, Jake.
  • Props
    • The props such as the jet ski and helicopter help to build this sense of power that Mrs Claus has, which displays this recurring theme of feminism; the fact that Mrs Claus is the one also controlling the mechanisms displays to the viewer that women are also perfectly capable of handling large tasks - she does all of this alone, without a man's help.
  • Mrs Claus is played by Janet McTeer, who is empowering and a strong female figure in society.
